Colistin Sulphate

Composition
Each 1 g contains:
Colistin sulphate 166.66 mg
(equivalent to colistin 133.3 mg, ~4 MIU)
Properties
A bactericidal polypeptide of the polymyxin group, disrupting bacterial cell-membrane phospholipids and permeability. Active against Gram-negative bacteria including E. coli and Salmonella spp.
Indications
Gastrointestinal infections: colibacillosis (E. coli) and salmonellosis susceptible to colistin, in non-ruminant calves, swine and poultry.
Dosage & Administration
Orally via drinking water.
Active ingredient — non-ruminant calves & swine: 102,500 IU/kg; poultry: 61,500 IU/kg.
Whole product — calves & swine: 0.025 g/kg every 12 hours for 3 days; poultry: 0.0153 g/kg daily for 3 days (≈0.15 g/litre drinking water).
Warnings & Precautions
Prepare medicated water fresh daily. Avoid combination with muscle relaxants. Not to be used with calcium, magnesium or manganese cations, or unsaturated fatty acids, which antagonise colistin.
Side Effects
Nausea, reduced appetite.
Withdrawal Time
Non-ruminant calves: 14 days. Swine: 7 days. Poultry & eggs: zero days.
Storage
Store in a dry place below 30°C; use immediately after reconstitution.
