Sulphaject 33.3

Sulphadimidine Sodium

Sulphaject 33.3

Composition

Each 100 ml contains:

Sulphadimidine sodium 33.3 g

(equivalent to sulphadimidine base 30 g)

Properties

A sulphonamide antibacterial structurally similar to p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA); interferes with nucleic-acid synthesis in sensitive micro-organisms by blocking conversion of PABA to dihydrofolic acid. Animals obtain dihydrofolic acid from dietary folic acid, so host cells are unaffected.

Indications

A wide variety of infections caused by sulphadimidine-sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Pasteurella spp., Salmonella spp., E. coli, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Streptococcus spp.) affecting the respiratory, urogenital or gastrointestinal systems or soft tissues — bacterial pneumonia, bovine respiratory disease complex, colibacillosis, necrotic dermatitis, calf diphtheria, acute mastitis and acute metritis.

Dosage & Administration

By I.M. or I.V. injection (I.V. given slowly).

Active ingredient: 200 mg sulphadimidine/kg body weight, then reduced to 100 mg/kg.

Cattle, buffaloes & horses: 1st dose 200 ml / 300 kg, 2nd dose 100 ml / 300 kg, for 5 days.

Calves: 1st dose 40 ml / 60 kg, 2nd dose 20 ml / 60 kg, for 5 days.

Sheep & goats: 1st dose 20 ml / 30 kg, 2nd dose 10 ml / 30 kg, for 5 days.

Warnings & Precautions

Administer by I.M. or I.V. injection only (I.V. should be given slowly). Not for use in cases of sulphonamide hypersensitivity. Intravenous use in horses may cause anaphylactic shock. Not for use in renal or hepatic impairment. Overdose may lead to muscular twitches and spasms, comatose symptoms, and liver damage. Ensure adequate fluid intake throughout treatment.
